While bankruptcy proceedings were opened for 469 companies in July 2024, which represents a massive increase of 33 per cent compared to the same month last year, the increase in bankruptcies from January to July was "only" 14 per cent - which is still a very high figure. According to Dun & Bradstreet's analysis, there were a total of 3,407 insolvency proceedings against companies in the first seven months of this year. There was a massive 28 per cent increase in company bankruptcies in Central Switzerland, driven in particular by the cantons of Zug (+39 per cent), Lucerne (+28 per cent) and Schwyz (+26 per cent). The sharp rise in bankruptcy figures contrasts with weak start-up data. Swiss entrepreneurs currently appear to be cautious when it comes to new start-ups. Their number rose by just three per cent between January and July 2024 compared to the same period in the previous year. The largest relative increase in start-ups was recorded in French-speaking Switzerland (+7 per cent), followed by Zurich (+3 per cent) and Central Switzerland, Eastern Switzerland and Ticino (all +2 per cent). In Espace Mittelland, new registrations rose only slightly (+ one per cent), while they stagnated at the previous year's level in Northwestern Switzerland.
