Company bankruptcies increase by 15 percent

In the first four months of 2024, the number of company bankruptcies rose by 15 percent compared to the same period in the previous year. In total, bankruptcy proceedings were opened for over 2,010 companies. The sharpest increase in company bankruptcies was in Central Switzerland, where insolvencies soared by 35%. This was followed by Southwestern Switzerland with an increase of 18 percent and Northwestern Switzerland with an increase of 17 percent. In Eastern Switzerland, insolvencies rose at the same rate as the national average, namely by 15 percent. There was a below-average increase in Zurich (+12%), Espace Mittelland (+3%) and Ticino (+2%). In the same period, the number of new entries in the commercial register rose by four percent. A total of 18,048 new companies were founded. Entrepreneurs in Southwestern Switzerland were the most active in setting up new companies, with an increase of eight percent. This was followed by Northwestern Switzerland with an increase of five percent and Espace Mittelland with four percent.
