Company bankruptcies rise by 17 percent

From January to May 2022, insolvency proceedings had to be opened for 1,916 companies in Switzerland. This represents an increase of 17 percent compared with the same period in the previous year. Some sectors stand out with particularly high increases in bankruptcy figures. Handicraft businesses in particular stand out negatively here. In this sector, there was a record number of 347 bankruptcies, an increase of 33 percent. In the case of business service providers, there was an increase of 27 percent with 205 cases. The automotive industry does not seem to be in good shape either, with bankruptcy cases rising by 18 percent to 73. There were also high growth rates in the IT sector, the wood and furniture industry, the construction industry, personal services and the real estate sector. While bankruptcies are currently soaring, the number of start-ups is declining. In the first five months of 2022, there were 20,953 new entries in the commercial register, a decrease of two percent.
