From January to April 2022, there were 1,448 corporate insolvencies in Switzerland. This represents an increase of 15 percent compared with the same period in the previous year. An analysis of bankruptcy trends by region reveals major differences. In Zurich, for example, corporate bankruptcies increased by as much as 52 percent. But there were also double-digit increases in Eastern Switzerland (+24%), Espace Mittelland (+22%) and Northwestern Switzerland (+14%). While insolvency cases increased slightly in central Switzerland (+3%), they decreased in French-speaking Switzerland (-1%) and Ticino (-10%). Also in the first four months of 2022, the number of new startups decreased. With a total of 16,639 new companies entered in the commercial register, startups declined by five percent.
