Q1 2022: Bankruptcies rise by 18 percent

In the first three months of this year, insolvency proceedings were opened in Switzerland against 1,190 companies. This is an increase of 18 percent compared with the first quarter of the previous year. The strongest growth was in Zurich, where there were 225 bankruptcy cases (+56%). However, corporate insolvencies also increased significantly in Eastern Switzerland (143 cases/ +29%), Northwestern Switzerland (157 cases/ +21%) and Espace Mittelland (197 cases/ +19%). While the number of bankruptcies increased, the number of new start-ups decreased by four percent. From January to March 2022, a total of 12,694 new companies were entered in the commercial register. Only in southwestern Switzerland was there a slight increase of one percent in the number of startups. In central and eastern Switzerland, the number stagnated. In Zurich, new registrations fell by two percent, in northwestern Switzerland by seven percent, in Ticino by eight percent and in Espace Mittelland by a full twelve percent.
