The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDT) tries to prevent motorists from gnashing their teeth in Nashville. It serves the transportation needs of the Volunteer State's some 5.7 million residents by maintaining and adding to the more than 14,000 miles of the state's roadway. The department's aeronautics division oversees the state's some 80 public-use airports. Its Office of Freight and Rail helps upkeep 3,000-plus miles of rail. This office additionally funds studies to improve Tennessee's 1,000-plus miles of waterway. TDT has an annual budget of more than $1.8 billion.
