Rouse Properties wants to keep the shopping mall a part of life in small town America. The real estate investment trust (REIT) owns and manages about 35 regional malls in more than 20 states across the country. Rouse Properties' malls are located in secondary and tertiary markets, where they are often the only mall in the area. With more than 23 million sq. ft. of space, the company's malls house big retail names such as American Eagle, Footlocker, Old Navy, Target, and Victoria's Secret, as well as sit-down restaurants (Buffalo Wild Wings, Red Robin) and food court standbys (Panda Express and Starbucks). Brookfield Asset Management agreed to buy Rouse Properties for $2.8 billion in early 2016.
