Renesas Electronics makes a multitude of microcontrollers, the devices that regulate operations in products from computer printers to microwave ovens to automobiles to factory robots. The company, formed when NEC Electronics and Renesas Technology combined chip operations in 2010, also turns out a wide array of microprocessors and power devices. Its products are used in automotive (in the auto factory as well as in the auto), industrial and, consumer electronics applications. In 2018, Renesas agreed to buy chipmaker IDT for $6.7 billion.
