President Michael Powell, whose father, Walter, opened City of Books in 1971, owns the firm. Unlike most chain and online book retailers, Powell's sells more used than new books and its Web site (accounting for some 40% of total sales) offers more than 1.5 million books, including a "Rare Book Room" with first editions. Powell's supplies used books to online bookselling giant Amazon.com, buying about 3,000 used books from walk-in customers each day to maintain its inventory, which is housed in five warehouses.
