Kering (pronounced "caring") has transformed itself from a conglomerate to the world's third-largest luxury group (behind LVMH and Richemont). The Paris-based company's stable of global luxury brands includes Italian high end lable Gucci as well as Alexander McQueen, Balenciaga, Bottega Veneta, and Saint Laurent. Kering also owns German athletic shoemaker PUMA. Nearly 70% of Kering's sales are generated beyond Western Europe. François Pinault founded the firm in 1963 as Pinault Group, which eventually became Pinault-Printemps-Redoute (PPR) and later Kering. The name change was in part a nod to its origins in the Brittany region of France. (In Breton "ker" means "home" and "place to live in.")
