Gallaudet University (GU) gives deaf and hard-of-hearing students the chance to be in the majority. Designed to accommodate hearing-impaired students, GU offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in more than 40 majors to about 2,000 students annually. The bilingual university, which uses both American Sign Language (ASL) and English, admits a small number of hearing, ASL-proficient students to each incoming freshman class. Through its Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Center, GU provides training and support for teachers and parents of hearing impaired children and operates demonstration schools. Founded in 1864, GU was named for Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet, a pioneer in education for the deaf.
