The Federal National Mortgage Association, better known as Fannie Mae, is a government-sponsored enterprise (GSE) that provides liquidity in the US mortgage market. Like its brother Freddie Mac, the company buys mortgages from lenders and packages them for resale, transferring risk from lenders and allowing them to offer mortgages to those who may not otherwise qualify. Through its single-family and multifamily business segments, Fannie Mae provided over $650 billion in liquidity to the mortgage market in 2019, which enabled the financing of approximately 3 million home purchases, refinancing or rental units.
