State-owned Electricité de France (EDF) has been quick to expand into global deregulated markets. One of the world's top electric utilities (as well as one of the last major state-controlled energy giants in Europe), EDF has a generating capacity of more than 620 TWh (primarily from nuclear sources) and provides power to 25 million French customers and 10 million customers in other countries. Its transmission and distribution subsidiaries in France operate 1.3 million km of low and medium voltage power lines and 100,000 km of high and very high voltage networks. Its EDF Trading unit trades a range of energy products.
