Peoria, Arizona was established in the 1880s based on the vision of William J. Murphy to use water from the Salt River to create fertile farm lands in Arizona. After the completion of the Arizona Canal, Murphy went east to sell his vision eventually convincing four families from Peoria, Illinois to make the move and establish the farming community. Now considered a suburb of Phoenix, Peoria has a population of about 120,000 and is growing steadily. The ninth largest city in Arizona, Peoria's six-person city council and mayor set policy and serve the legislative role for the city, the City Manager oversees daily operations and acts as the city's CEO.
