CDC Group is a Development Finance Institution (DFI) that invests in the private sectors of impoverished nations to stimulate their economies. It focuses on emerging markets in Africa and South Asia, where 70% of the world's poor people live. CDC makes investments directly, as well as through third-party fund managers, often making continued investments for 10 years. The self-funding firm is owned by the UK government, though the government is not involved with the firm's operations. Established in 1948 as part of the UK's efforts to reduce worldwide poverty, CDC now boasts £3.4 billion in total assets ($5 billion) and is invested in more than 1,300 portfolio firms across some 80 countries.
