Brazil-based BRF is among the world's largest food companies, specializing in fresh and frozen meats. Vertically integrated, BRF operates its own farms, slaughterhouses, animal-feed units, incubators, and processing plants. The company's lineup comprises 3,000-plus items, including chicken, pork, some beef and dairy, as well as a slew of processed foods (nearly half of sales), such as butter, cheese, desserts, ready-to-eat meals, pasta, and pizza. Products are sold under many brands -- Perdigão, Sadia, Qualy, Chester, and Perdix -- at home and abroad. BRF has withdrawn from certain international markets of late, serving mainly Saudi Arabia abroad. Tracing its roots back to 1934, BRF was formed from the merger of Perdigão and rival Sadia in 2009.
