There are many areas of master data management (MDM) where organizations often struggle to understand the right approach on a given master data challenge. One such area is in the realm of master record promotion/survivorship.
Most companies understand that it’s a business imperative to have a single version of the truth for a given account/partner/supplier, but when you’re trying to evaluate between two entities that appear to be equally valid, making the right decision on which record should ‘win’ can often prove to be a daunting task.
That’s why we’ve created The Master Record Promotion Checklist; to provide some guidance as you look to implement an operational Master Customer hub – which requires all instances of a matched entity to be merged into a single record.
Unfortunately, there really are no ‘best demonstrated practices’ when it comes to determining which customer or vendor record out of a cluster of duplicate candidate records should ‘become the single promoted’ to gold master. Determining which record should survive and which records should be archived or inactivated will ultimately require several iterations of testing and will likely involve as much art as science.
In the meantime, we hope this guide helps you understand what to look out for when considering which records to promote. Print it out and think of it as a cheat-sheet on your master data journey.
