Company Profile is the fourth of four components within the D&B Viability Rating. The Company Profile describes a company based on a combination of 4 categories:


  • Financial Data
  • Trade Payments
  • Company Size
  • Years in Business

A company is characterized by a letter which ranges from A – X; with each letter representing a combination of the 4 categories that make up the company’s profile. For example, A describes a company with a comprehensive level data, which has been in business 5+ years, with 50+ employees or $500K+ in Sales, while X reflects a company with a minimal data, in business <5 years, with <10 employees or <$10K in Sales. Y and Z reflect a Branch and Subsidiary, respectively.

The D&B Viability Rating uses D&B’s proprietary analytics to compare the most predictive business risk indicators and deliver a highly reliable assessment of the probability that a company will no longer be in business within the next 12 months. The D&B Viability Rating is made up of 4 components:


  1. Viability Score is a high-level risk indicator that assesses the probability that a company will no longer be in business within the next 12 months, compared to all US businesses within the D&B database. The Viability score is based on available financial data, trade payments, firmographics and other business activity.

  2. Portfolio Comparison is a more detailed risk indicator that assesses the viability of a company, compared to similar businesses within the same model segment. Each company will be placed in 1 of the 4 model segments which are determined by the amount and type of data available: Available Financial Data, Established Trade Payments, Limited Trade Payments or Firmographics and Business Activity.

  3. Data Depth Indicator presents the level of data available for a company. Data depth assists in the assessment of whether a company will no longer be viable and includes financial attributes, commercial trading activity and firmographics.

  4. Company Profile describes a company based on a combination of 4 categories: Financial Data, Trade Payments, Company Size and Years in Business.

D&B Rating Interpretation Table

The US 5A to HH ratings reflect company size based on net worth or equity as computed by D&B. These ratings are assigned to businesses that have supplied D&B with current financial information.


The 1R and 2R ratings categories reflect company size based on the total number of employees for the business. They are assigned to business files that do not contain a current financial statement. For 5A to HH Ratings, the Composite Credit Appraisal is a number between 1 and 4 that makes up the second half of the company's Rating and reflects an overall assessment of creditworthiness. Our creditworthiness assessment is based on both payments and financial stability. In 1R and 2R Ratings, the 2, 3, or 4 creditworthiness indicator is based on analysis by D&B of public filings, trade payments, business age and other important factors. 2 is the highest Composite Credit Appraisal a company not supplying D&B with current financial information can receive.

INV Indicates that D&B is currently conducting an investigation to gather information for a new report.
DS Indicates that the information available does not permit D&B to classify the company within our rating key.
-- (blank) The blank symbol should not be interpreted as indicating that credit should be denied. It simply means that the information available to D&B does not permit us to classify the company within our rating key and that further enquiry should be made before reaching a decision. Some reasons for using a "-" symbol include: deficit net worth, bankruptcy proceedings, lack of insufficient payment information, or incomplete history information.
ER Certain lines of business, primarily banks, insurance companies, and government entities, do not lend themselves to classification under the D&B Rating system. Instead, we assign these types of businesses an Employee range symbol based on the number of people employed. No other significance should be attached to this symbol. ERN should not be interpreted negatively. It simply means we do not have information indicating how many people are employed at this firm.
NQ Not Quoted. This is generally assigned when a business has been confirmed as no longer active at the location, or when D & B is unable to confirm active operations. It may also appear on some branch reports, when the branch is located in the same city as the headquarters.

Commercial Credit Score

What is the D&B Commercial Credit Score and what does it mean?


D&B’s Commercial Credit Score (CCS) is designed to predict the likelihood of a business paying its bills in a severely delinquent manner (91 days or more past terms), obtaining legal relief from its creditors or ceasing operations without paying all creditors in full over the next 12 months. D&B defines severe delinquency as a business with at least 10% of its payments 91 days or more past due, based on the information in D&B’s commercial database. The score ranges from 101 to 670, where 101 represent the highest probability and 670 represent the lowest possibility of delinquency.


The CCS Commercial Credit Scores are calculated using statistical models derived from D&B's extensive database of U.S. businesses including Payment, Public Filing, Demographic, and Financial information when available. The Scoring System segments the universe of businesses into five distinct Risk Classes where a one (1) represents businesses that have the lowest probability of severe delinquency, and five (5) represents businesses with the highest probability of severe delinquency. The Commercial Credit Score Percentile is a 1-100 ranking where a percentile of 1 has the highest probability of severe delinquency and a percentile of 100 has the lowest probability of severe delinquency.
