Dun & Bradstreet endeavors to create, maintain and promote a sustainable work environment using the best available practices and resources, while maintaining team member comfort, health and productivity. Dun & Bradstreet supports environmental and corporate responsibility as follows:
Dun & Bradstreet currently tracks energy consumption for main office locations via Energy Star.
- Over the period of mid-March 2014 through mid-May 2016, the average monthly usage of natural gas in our Center Valley office was approximately 107 kcf (thousand cubic feet) and the average monthly usage of electricity was 236,000 kWh (thousand Watt-hours). Usage varies according to many factors, including weather and building occupancy.
- Real Estate standards used for office space to maintain effective use of space include: centralized copy rooms and shared printing devices with energy saving capabilities, occupancy sensors, video and telephone conferencing via Skype (to reduce travel), open environment with standard size furniture, 7’ X 9’ workstations (eliminating the need for construction material), and Building Management System to control HVAC and lighting during unoccupied periods (for example, the lights turn off automatically at our Short Hills location at a specified time in the evening). In addition, over the last year, D&B has started to change our furniture footprint by converting from our standard size workstations to a benching environment, 2.5’ X 5’. This allows D&B to maximize our space and create more efficiency.
- Electronic recycling
events are organized annually to provide an opportunity for team
members to recycle home electronics and appliances . Dun &
Bradstreet also recycles our technology equipment, such as computers
and printers, through local vendors and a third party vendor whom we
contract. The number of technology items recycled for the period of
April 2014 through April 2016 are:
- 286 computer monitors
- 1,443 computer (desktops and laptops)
- 11 printers
- 2 servers
- Multiple pallets of computer peripherals, such as AC adapters, cables, port replicators
- Water consumption is minimized by using motion sensor and low-flow equipment and appliances. For the period of mid-April 2014 through mid-April 2016, the average monthly water usage in our Center Valley office was approximately 112,625 gallons. For the period of mid-February 2014 through December 23, 2016, the average monthly water usage in our Parsippany office was approximately 111,400 gallons. Usage varies according to many factors, including building occupancy.
Dun & Bradstreet has formal recycling programs in our main office locations for paper, glass, cardboard, toner cartridges, aluminum cans, light bulbs, ballasts and batteries and computer equipment.
Dun & Bradstreet implemented a land-fill free program at our Center Valley, PA, office effective 10/13/11, in which the trash is transported to an Energy from Waste (EfW) plant where it is incinerated and the energy is transmitted to the energy grid.
Pest control and janitorial services use environmental safe products.
Dun & Bradstreet has been purchasing renewable energy credits (REC’s) since 2010 as a part of our energy agreements for our main office locations. The percent of green energy was 35% for 2014, and 40% for 2015 and 2016.
- Dun & Bradstreet participates in an Alternate Workplace program in which 14% of our work force in the United States works from their home. This program is sustainable in that our employees do not have to travel to the office. This program reduces overall energy consumption.
- Dun & Bradstreet partners with WageWorks to provide discounts for employees on public transportation.
- Dun & Bradstreet has been a Demand
Response Program participant since 2009. Under this program,
regional electricity grid operator, PJM, calls Dun & Bradstreet
when there is stress on the grid (for example, during extremely hot
days in the summer) and requests to reduce our electricity
consumption. Dun & Bradstreet responds by shutting down all
non-essential electric services and switching to generator power.
This program prevents the grid provider from having to fire up
another power plant to cover the extra electricity demand. The
program also prevents brown/black outs that would otherwise
jeopardize hospitality and critical service organizations.
Internal Organizational Resources
We have a designated “Sustainability Team” of Dun & Bradstreet team members who focus on sustainability initiatives, such as reduction of energy consumption efforts in the office, maintaining Dun & Bradstreet’s internal sustainability website, reducing waste and organization of employee recycling events. Dun & Bradstreet maintains a Sustainability website on our intranet which provides information and updates for team members on Dun & Bradstreet’s sustainability efforts. The website includes information on the Sustainability Team members and how to contact them, corporate actions, updates and information relating to sustainability and sustainability resources. The website also provides tips on what each team member can do personally to impact energy consumption.

For example, we use video, web and teleconferencing when possible to reduce travel. We also have an open-plan office design that reduces the resources needed to configure our space. The furniture and carpets, in many of our office locations, are made of materials that can be recycled at the end of their useful life. At most Dun & Bradstreet locations, we have programs in place to eliminate individual printers, fax machines and scan devices and have centralized these services with multi-function devices that can scan, fax, print and copy and, most importantly, go into "energy saver" mode when not in use. Reducing the number of machines while increasing the operating efficiency of each yields a triple win: less equipment to purchase and maintain, reduced energy use and lower cost. We have also addressed the use of paper, printing, mailing and related resources, by moving certain aspects of our administration online, reducing the need to print reports. Other electronic initiatives have enabled us to move a variety of other corporate functions away from printed materials, such as online holiday cards, payroll, travel and entertainment reimbursement processing, and timecard processing. These online initiatives help team members save energy resources as well as function more efficiently.
Email Usage Statements
Dun & Bradstreet customers receives monthly usage statements via email. Switching to email from physical mail and print can potentially save over 1 million pieces of paper from being printed annually.
